What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is one of the UK’s most significant green incentives. It offers government grants to property owners for the installation of certain renewable heating systems:

  • £7,500 off an air source heat pump
  • £7,500 off a biomass boiler (rural/off-gas only)
  • £5,000 off a ground source heat pump

Now integrated into the £15 billion Warm Homes Plan, the scheme has been extended to 2028 with a massive £1.5 billion in additional funding to continue promoting renewable energy. Funding is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

The scheme is administered by Ofgem and is part of the government’s wider strategy to decarbonise heating in buildings.

Can I Get a Grant for a Hybrid Boiler?

No – under the current rules of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), hybrid heating systems (which combine a heat pump with a traditional gas or oil boiler) are not eligible for the £7,500 grant.

Why the Grant Excludes Hybrids?

The UK government’s goal is to move homes entirely away from fossil fuels. To qualify for the funding, the new system must replace your fossil fuel boiler completely.

  • Your new heat pump must be capable of providing 100% of your home’s heating and hot water demand.
  • You can keep your existing radiators (provided they are sized correctly), but the gas boiler itself must be decommissioned as part of the installation.

Exclusive Improveasy £500 Bonus

On top of the government grant, we are offering an additional £500 manufacturer discount
on all heat pump installations. This means you can
save a total of £8,000.

To make the transition even easier, we also offer flexible finance options, allowing you
to spread the cost in a way that suits your budget.

How to Apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

Applying for a £7,500 government grant might sound daunting, but we’ve simplified the process into four simple steps. Improveasy handles the entire Ofgem application process to secure your grant. We take the stress out of the switch.

1

Get Your Competitive Quote

The first step is finding an MCS-certified installer, which is a mandatory requirement for BUS eligibility. While you can shop around, Improveasy provides transparent, upfront quotes and handles the technical heavy lifting for you, as well giving you a further £500 exclusive discount on top.

  • The Cost: With the £7,500 grant and £500 Improveasy discount applied, most homeowners typically see a remaining contribution between £3,000 and £6,000.
  • Flexible Funding: If you’d prefer not to pay the remaining balance upfront, we offer flexible finance options to spread the cost.

2

The “Hands-Off” Application

You don’t need to fill out any government forms. Once you’re happy with your quote, Improveasy applies for the grant on your behalf before any work begins.

  • The Consent: Ofgem will send you a quick email or letter to confirm that you’ve given us permission to act as your installer. Once you click “confirm,” the ball is officially rolling.
3

Professional Installation

After Ofgem approves the application, we schedule your installation. To comply with grant rules, the heat pump must be installed within 3 months of approval.

  • The Timeline: Our expert team usually complete the job in 2 to 4 days, depending on the size of your property and any necessary radiator upgrades. We ensure minimal disruption to your daily routine.
4

Grant Claim & Completion

Once the heat pump is up and running, we claim the £7,500 directly from the government. You never have to wait for a reimbursement check; the grant will have already been deducted from your total bill.

We’ll provide all your final certificates, and you can start enjoying a warmer, greener home immediately.

Is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme Worth It? The Honest Answer.

In 2026, the short answer is yes—as a long-term investment rather than
a quick fix. With the grant now sitting at a substantial £7,500, the financial
gap between a traditional gas boiler and a high-tech heat pump has never been
smaller.
Especially with Improveasy’s additional £500 off.
